AGENCY DESCRIPTION


The York Area Regional Police Department is a Pennsylvania Accredited full service law enforcement agency consisting of
fifty officers serving a suburban area of over 53,000 residents in York Township, Windsor Township, the boroughs of Dallastown, Windsor, Jacobus, Yoe, Felton, and Red Lion on a contract basis.  There has been very rapid growth in the community and the police department is expected to continue to expand in size.


The York Area Regional Police Department covers an area that is primarily located to the South of the City of York, Pennsylvania and covers a geographical area of over 60 square miles. The area includes commercial shopping centers, many types of residential housing including some densely populated boroughs with older housing, and some light industry and farms.


The Police Department enforces all of the laws of the Commonwealth using a patrol force under the direction of five sergeants and utilizing Vascar and Electronic Speed devices for speed enforcement and also making use of numerous methods for enforcement of the various traffic laws. The Police Department participates in regular Sobriety Checkpoints with the York County Center for Highway Safety programs and also regularly arrests drunk drivers. Officers participate in awareness and enforcement programs including Buckle Up PA and Smooth Operator.  They provide child safety seat usage and installation assistance and also are actively involved with input for design of new roads and intersections.


The department has numerous officers trained in advanced accident investigation methods and the officers receive regular update training in traffic enforcement methods and laws. They also have participated in bicycle and driver safety programs at various schools and are regularly represented at the Governor's Highway Safety program. There are two officers assigned to the K-9 Unit with a general duty and a drug detection canine.


There are four officers assigned as School Resource Officers in Red Lion Schools, Dallastown Schools and York County School of Technology.


The department has implemented the D.A.R.E. Drug Abuse Resistance Education program in conjunction with the Dallastown Area School District and currently over 450 school children are receiving this curriculum presented by three officers of the department.
 

There is a four member investigative unit headed by a sergeant that handles the full range of investigative activity. The department’s four patrol sergeants and four administrative clerks also assist the investigative unit. The investigative unit gathers intelligence information and is known for having a great deal of skill in evidence processing and complicated investigations. Several neighboring departments regularly contact the investigators for assistance in handling cases and training their people.
